Credit

Each student gains over 250 hours of time in Costa Rica, with almost of 40 of those hours being dedicated to education in forms of lectures, hands on site visits and sustainability tours. Additionally, each student is required to read and complete over 100 pages of bookwork, keep a journal of their experiences, complete a written capstone project coupled with a presentation, and design, build, and install a sustainable technology on an impoverished home as community service.

While this program does not immediately provide credit upon completion, more than 75% of our students who choose to receive credit, obtain it independently from their university as an independent study.  While we place an equivalence of 3 credits on the GREEN program, Universities such as Rutgers, Penn State, and Ohio State have issued up to 6 credits for a student who has completed the course.

Each topic of renewable energy and sustainability is covered during a 1-2 hour lecture. Prior to each lecture, each student is required to complete approximately 20 pages of related reading as well as an article dealing with the current issues related to the subject. The interactive lectures are facilitated by seasoned professionals and industry experts with years of experience. Some lectures take on a hands-on component while others are engendered in a collaborative atmosphere, and some are structured as a debate. In each case, the students receive a broad understanding of each topic and are prepared to see it in action during a plant visit.

The GREEN Program offers a comprehensive investigation of various types of renewable energy and provides hands-on opportunities for each student to understand how each one functions. In addition, concepts of sustainable development, building, organic farming, design are explored through in person visitations and exclusive tours of sustainable building projects, reforestation projects, organic farms and more.

Each student completes a rigorous curriculum designed to push their bounds forward with the hands-on application of theory and book-knowledge. Most importantly, each student leaves the program informed, fulfilled and inspired to apply their newfound experience to the rest of their academic program and carry it out throughout their professional career.

The GREEN Program is open to all majors and is designed to address each topic of renewable energy and sustainability from an interdisciplinary perspective, covering both the technical aspects and the financial considerations of each topic.

Typically, students work directly with a specific department at their University to arrange an Independent Study focused on the GREEN Program. In addition to the GREEN Curriculum, each specific department usually required a daily journal and/or a program reflection paper to earn credit.

Exclusive site visits to functioning renewable energy facilities is one of the academic highlights of the program. By stressing experiential learning and giving students access to industry professionals in their element of work the students are able to see the day-to-day atmosphere and responsibilities of plant managers, engineers and supporting staff. Each site visit is led by a head engineer and in some cases the plant administrator, who provides a thorough overview of the plant, its purpose, success rate, economic implications, challenges and concerns. Students are encouraged to ask challenging questions and can expect to leave with a thorough understanding of the plant, its mechanics, finances and working atmosphere. Students then participate in an interactive review session of each plant where they discuss the challenges and prospects for each plant and the type of renewable energy as they see it.

A major academic highlight of the program is the Capstone Project. Each student is paired up with another student of a different major to work on an innovative and socially responsible proposal which should utilize the concepts of renewable energy and sustainability which are discussed during the program. By working together and seeking feedback from industry professionals who frequently stop by to offer guidance and advice, the students develop a feasible and marketable concept to improve the world around them. The project culminates in public presentations of the proposals to the entire group including peers, industry experts, and local policy makers. The idea behind the capstone project encourages the students to see the world around them as a dynamic playground open to change and innovation. With thorough research and feedback each student team should leave the program with a completed proposal ready to be presented and implemented back in the United States.

Giving back is a major theme of the GREEN Program. We believe that innovation comes from conscious understanding of the world’s problems and the active challenge to address them. For this reason, a portion of the student fee and time is dedicated towards designing, developing and installing a renewable energy innovation on the home of an impoverished family in the local community. Many students see this aspect as a major highlight of their trip as the incredible feeling associated with giving back creates an inspiring bond between the student, his or her peers and those in need of assistance. Not to mention the students can implement their knowledge in really making a lasting difference for a local family.

Winter 2012

The GREEN program has been a once in a lifetime experience, seriously.  I’ve learned so much about the country of Costa Rica and renewable energy while doing so many activities alongside such a wonderful, unique mix of people from all over the country world.  Without a doubt I would recommend GREEN to anyone and my only suggestion would be to constantly have an open mind.
